Looting the Dollar Tree in Minnesota

Earlier this week Daunte Wright, a twenty-year-old black man was killed by the police in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota after a routine traffic stop. This was a tragedy. The residents in the community were quite upset and protested throughout the day into the night. A strip mall in the area was looted and among the stores was a Dollar Tree. All of the items in the Dollar Tree were a dollar.

There is a chance that in the process of looting someone could’ve been arrested or hurt climbing through the broken glass. Why would anyone want to get arrested over a few dollar items? Let’s not make the looting be a reflection of the legacy of this young man. His family members say that he was a good young man with a beautiful smile.

Take all of that justified anger and do something worthwhile in your community. Organize a community event to pick up litter. What about doing a voter registration event? What about virtual tutoring for children falling behind as a result of virtual school? Work with organizations that help with cash bonds. There are so many things that can be done to combat systemic racism and help towards eliminating police violence. It must start at a grassroots level in our communities. Make Daunte’s memory mean something.
