Crime is occurring in our community at alarming rates. People of color are dying in large numbers daily. These deaths are not caused by law enforcement or hate groups but instead, these tragic incidents are being perpetrated by us. The majority of offenders in these violent crimes are young people (15 – 20 years old).
I live in the Atlanta area and often hear people talk about how crime rates in the ATL have increased exponentially. This epidemic of violence is also happening nationally and continues to get worse. Though this crime wave is happening nationally I want to specifically focus on the black community. In talking with others about this growing problem in our community, most say “that’s just the way things are.” This is not the way things should be.
Why is it that when a person of color is killed by law enforcement or a member of a hate group, people of color protest, destroy things but do nothing when we kill each other?
So my question is “where are our leaders”? Where are the athletes that these young people idolize? Where are the rappers that these young people listen to and constantly try to emulate? All of these groups and people are influencers but we don’t hear from them. We all need to collectively get involved and do all that we can to prevent the atrocities that are happening in our communities. Do your part,” if you see something, say something”. Peace out!!!
