Purchasing a home or a business is an investment and there will be times that you’ll need the services of a contractor. Sometimes selecting a contractor can be a challenge. We often rely on or ask our family or friends for recommendations. This process of hiring a contractor works most of the time but there are times when things can go terribly wrong.
One thing that we must consider when choosing a contractor is whether we are getting a handyman or a legitimate contractor. Case in point, recently during a home improvement project, my wife and I hired a guy to install a bathtub without knowing or seeing any of his past work, he was recommended by a friend. This guy never connected the values which caused water to get under our wood floors that required two months to correct.
I have a dear friend who is currently trying to recover money from a so-called contractor that took her money for materials but never purchased the supplies or returned her money. My friend had used this person before and trusted him but he showed who he really was in that situation.
I’m sure many of you have had to employ contractors and have had similar experiences or may the person or persons you hired to start your project may show up one day and go missing for several days before they return to work on what they started.
There is a saying that goes like this, you get what you pay for…. So my suggestion is that you only hire licensed contractors and get a statement of work in writing in case they default then you’ll have a better chance of recovering your money.
