Pride in Community and the Environment

This topic was touched on several months ago. However, it is one that I feel compelled to revisit. It s very concerning to witness the disrespect that some have for our environment which Webster defines as “surroundings or conditions in which a person animal or plant lives or operates.

As I travel around the city, I’m appalled at things that people discard on our streets and roadways. lt’s disheartening to see people at grocery stores, gas stations, and shopping malls throw trash in the parking lot instead of putting in receptacles that are nearby. What’s even more disappointing Is that people will bring trash from their homes in a different community and leave it in another community because they are unwilling to pay for monthly trash pickup. Our elected officials need to start enforcing the no littering laws. Whatever happened to serve and protect? Serve up some fines and protect our communities!

It is common knowledge that unkept communities don’t do well, crime is a huge problem and businesses refuse to operate in these areas because they are deemed unsafe. When this happens, it is inevitab\e that property values will go down. How can anyone expect others to respect their community when there is no self, community respect? No disrespect to anyone but even if you are a renter, you should have pride in your community. For instance, if you are living in an apartment and you see debris in the surrounding area, pick it up. You should not want your visiting family and friends to see trash thrown about your surroundings.

I’m not sure how to specifically address this very troubling problem but I do suggest that we all start taking pride in our communities. Pick up the trash in the area in which you live. It’s something that I do in my subdivision daily. Let’s change the environment. Educate our children on the importance of living in a clean, well-kept community.

Thank you for your support.
