The Importance of Voting
Come this November (2022) the many elections held will mark a pivotal moment in the history of this country. It will be the first election following extreme gerrymandering of voting districts, extreme election laws put into effect by Republican legislators across the country, and indications that handpicked committees, not Secretaries of State will certify elections. There will be both state and federal elections for positions such as School Board Members, Congressman, Senators, Secretary of State just to name a few. These elections will be held under the auspices of mostly Republican-leaning legislators who have embraced the big lie of a “stolen election.”
Many are not realizing the severity of the state of this country at this time and how integral the voting process is to us as citizens. How ridiculous is it that food or beverages cannot be given to people standing in long voting lines? Give me a break! Can you believe that this is now against the law here in Georgia? Really! Giving out food and beverages? You can thank the Republican legislators here in this state for this hateful law. Right now, in the state of Texas, hundreds of mail-in voting applications were rejected because of strict identification measures signed into law by Republicans this year. Also, in the state of Florida the Governor there is contemplating having a group of individuals appointed whose specific purpose will be to monitor elections.
This seems like subliminal intimidation. It is the sixties and voter restrictions all over again. John Lewis, our recently deceased Congressman from Georgia had his head bashed in while protesting for the right to vote. Were his efforts in vain? We need some bold actions by Democrats. Why won’t they use their power to right the many Republican wrongs before it is too late and we end up in an Authoritarian country where the minority, not the majority rule. People fought and died for the precious right to vote. Some of us are so nonchalant and detached when it comes to voting.
Many feel that our votes will not count. Your vote counts but only if you exercise that right. The Supreme Court is also missing in action. They will not ban the draconian Texas law that appoints vigilantes to sue individuals associated with abortion rights. Nor will they address the abuse of voting rights. In fact, it is the Supreme Court that struck down voting rights legislation. And they claim not to be political. Then there are fifty Republicans and two Democrats that are in the pockets of big business and will do nothing to promote voting rights.
It is time for bold action on the part of Democrats. They need to stop whining and trying to collaborate with another party that wants no part of compromising. Stand up for the rights of decent, law-abiding citizens who only want to live and let live. We must have a free and fair election. Our democracy is in peril. Do not take it for granted. If we lose it, we might not be able to get it back. God bless America. We really need his blessings now!
