While growing up did you ever play the game “That’s my Car” with your friend? I did. When we noticed nice cars driving through the neighborhood we would say “that’s my car.” Driving nice cars gives the illusion of “having arrived.” Gauging a person’s worth by the type of car that person drives can be very misleading. Personally, before I realized what value is I lived in an apartment and was driving my dream car, which was a Mercedes. However, when the car needed to be serviced, I could not afford the cost. I quickly learned what value is and away went the Mercedes.
At one point there was a new neighbor in the subdivision, and I assumed this neighbor was well off, and living a good life as there was a boat, a Hummer, a Mercedes, and a Bentley in the driveway. I was later informed after the neighbor had to move suddenly that this individual was renting the residence and not buying. I also discovered that after moving the individual’s lifestyle was significantly downsized. What I saw was an illusion of wealth. Did this individual know what value is?
Now, I am not trying to throw anyone under the bus. However, homeownership as opposed to renting and owning luxury cars is where the value is. Let us be clear, luxury cars do look fabulous and oftentimes the ride is second to none. The question is, would you want to live in a wonderful place or drive a luxury car? Profit-driven property owners have increased rent prices significantly to the point that now a decent two-bedroom apartment rents for anywhere between $1400 and $1600 dollars per month. The value is in homeownership. When you decide to become a homeowner you are building your assets, have a backup if you need to use the equity in the home and you are also building generational wealth.
Understand where the value is, once you become a homeowner life will begin to look a whole lot better and work for your good. You will also begin to notice more where the value is as you constantly make upgrades to improve your home and its value. You will also feel good about your accomplishments and coming home to a place you feel comfortable in. You will realize that the value is in coming home, unwinding, and briefly getting away from the troubles of the world. You will be at peace with yourself and those you love which is another example of where the value is.
