What a way to celebrate Black History Month. In a matter of days or months, President Biden will take the bold step to appoint a Black woman to the Supreme Court. This matters to all citizens but especially to people of color. What a Black woman will bring to the court is first of all diversity. Along with diversity will come opinions, backgrounds, and life experiences different from many of those that presently sits on the court. With the appointment of a Black woman, the court will begin to reflect just how the country looks now.
This country is steadily becoming “browner.” At some point within the next ten or so years, America will become a minority-majority country. Though there is presently a Black man on the Supreme Court he does not reflect any of the thoughts, ideology, or opinions of Black people in general. Clarence Thomas, the lone Black person on the court right now is an extreme, right-leaning conservative. In other words, most things that affect Black people do not seem to occupy any space in the mind of Clarence Thomas. Black women have contributed much to this country. It is commendable that President Biden is fulfilling his promise and appointing a Black, female Supreme Court Justice.
As citizens in America in 2022, we will witness a historic event when this appointment occurs. It makes me proud to be a Black woman as we have helped to shape this country in many ways. Right off of the slave ships we took care of the white folks’ children, cooked their meals, worked in the fields, and contributed much to the wealth of America. All of these services were provided via free labor while oftentimes being tortured, mistreated, and seen as less than human in the process.
Now it is time for us as a people to as stated by California Representative Maxine Waters “reclaim our time.” All of the candidates for this appointment are super qualified. That is the story of black advancement in this country. We have to work harder, be much more intelligent and face a lot of “BS” as we move up the ladder of success in this country.
Other individuals in this country have the nerve to say that appointing a Black woman is affirmative action. Well, what would you call 115 appointments on the Court since its inception with the majority of these appointments being white men? Is this considered to be discriminatory towards those of other races? I don’t hear anybody pontificating about this. Of course not, because that would be too much like right. It is a good thing that finally someone on the court can represent the thoughts and opinions of Black women and Black people in general.
There again this is a very prevalent example of the fact that our votes do count. The Supreme Court makes profoundly serious decisions that affect many facets of our lives. The struggle is real, we must continue to press on. One day we all will all be able to say, “free at last, free at last,” thank God almighty I’m free at last.” This will only happen if we continue to participate in the democratic processes of voting, running for office, and supporting democratic agendas that address the issues pertinent to our communities.
