Virginia “Ginni” Lamp Thomas is from Omaha Nebraska, she is an attorney and conservative activist. Her spouse is Clarence Thomas, a Supreme Court Justice. They were married in 1987. There are many puzzling facts about Ms. Thomas that I want to remain unbiased about, but a number of her stances give me pause. She has openly admitted that she is a supporter of Trump and his politics. She also validated her attendance at the rally that preceded the January 6 attack on the US Capitol where many lives were lost. However, she denied helping to plan the attack. Ms. Thomas also noted that she left the rally before Trump addressed the crowd.
According to an investigation done by the New York Times, Ms. Thomas sits on the board of a rightwing group that circulated “action steps” after the 2020 election, in an attempt to keep Trump in POWER. One of the organizers of the rally told the Times that Thomas was a “peacekeeper” between various factions of these groups. However, Thomas repudiated those allegations. So, the question is, are there conflicts of interest with Justice Thomas’s rulings in matters that involve his wife’s association with rightwing organizations? Mark Joseph Stern, a staff writer for Slate Magazine reports that on the morning of January 6, “Ginni “Thomas endorsed the protest by demanding that congress overturn the election. Imagine that. A Supreme Court Justice’s wife being involved in suggestions that a legitimate election is overturned is quite befuddling.
Finally, it is my opinion that because of the aforementioned it would behoove Justice Thomas to voluntarily remove himself from certain rulings that come before the Supreme Court. Furthermore, Justice Thomas should abstain from any matter that his wife is involved with. According to an article published in the New York Times on March 14, 2022, Clarence Thomas was the only Justice that dissented to the other Justices’ rejection of Trump’s request to stop a House Select Committee’s access to his White House records.
