What Can Congress Do for You?

With all the back and forth that goes on between politicians we often forget that they are servants of the people. When issues regarding Medicare, social security, veterans’ benefits, IRS, passports and immigration arise congress can assist by contacting the federal agencies that handle all of the aforementioned on your behalf. They might not be able to solve the issues, but they are able to expedite the resolution. There are caseworkers assigned to your representative in congress that handle issues involving these federal agencies.

However, do not take too long to make contact to address your concerns. Being that the previously mentioned agencies fall under federal jurisdiction staff working in your representative’s office have a direct line to these agencies. The staff assigned to your congressional representative can inquire on your behalf once you’ve signed a privacy release form. You need to ensure that you contact the representative specifically assigned to your district. Staff in your representative’s office have relationships with staff in federal agencies and will work to get your issues resolved as soon as possible.

Commendation letters can also be requested. These commendation letters help to make an occasion memorable. If you wish to recognize an honor, achievement, or milestone birthday a commendation letter can be requested. Other reasons for commendation letters are eagle scout award, girl scout award, retirements, births, graduations, weddings just to name a few. Think how awesome it would be to get a letter from your congressman/woman for any of the aforementioned. Congress also does recommendations for those applying to Military Academies. Each Representative is allowed to do recommendations for a set number of cadets. Websites that will assist in finding your representative are: house.gov and congress.gov.

When requesting assistance from your representative there is certain demographic information that you will need, such documents/information that might be needed are: social security numbers, VA claim number, taxpayer ID etc. Other information needed are contact information, i.e., name, address, phone number, and copies of documents related to your correspondence. Hope that this information proves to be helpful to you. In this day and time when money is sometimes short, and resources are limited it’s always best to have a “ram in the bush” to assist at times of need.
