Have any of you had to call for 911 assistance lately? Well, I did on behalf of a friend. On March 20, 2022, a young lady’s vehicle was burglarized in Midtown Atlanta. Around 10:30 pm I called 911 for her and was put on hold for almost three minutes. Once I spoke with the operator, I was told that an officer would be dispatched. As of 12:30 am still no officer on the scene. 911 was called again and that time the operator was unable to advise me as to when an officer would be dispatched. This was disturbing because it is expected that when a call is made to 911 there will be a response from local law enforcement.
I understand that calls are prioritized. However, no response is unacceptable. The 911 operator was told that the burglarized vehicle belonged to a woman, and she was alone. I feel that based on the time the call was made it should have received a higher priority and a response from law enforcement. The fact that a 911 call was placed on hold is concerning and to receive no response at all is even more troubling.
I have heard others’ 911 horror stories. This lack of response should not go unaddressed. This is a matter that should be concerning to all. As previously stated on this platform “the way to perfect change is to get involved.” Do not feel that because it did not happen to you it does not matter. Get involved, make a difference. Address troubling matters in your community. All governmental agencies have a protocol for addressing matters of concern. Use it if warranted.
