On Sunday 3/27/22 in full view at the Oscars, one of America’s beloved stars, Will Smith (on live television) inflicted a very violent slap on another high-profile star, Chris Rock. Before the slap, Chris Rock made an off-color joke about Will’s wife, Jada that focused on her bald head, which is the result of alopecia, an autoimmune condition. It has been rumored that there was ongoing animosity between Chris, Will, and Jada. However, does this ongoing animosity warrant violence? I say “no.” Members of the Black community have suffered decades of self-hatred and violence towards each other. Years of being berated and persecuted can cause great self-doubt. Additionally, we continue to live in a society where Black lives are undervalued. Instead of lashing out at each other let us show respect, love, kindness, and patience.
It took a full day for Smith to personally apologize to Chris Rock. Let us always take responsibility for our actions. We are role models for our children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many other young people in our communities. We are our brother’s keeper. It is imperative that we show love to others especially those that look like us. When you make a mistake, own it. We must continually model good behavior. Always be mindful of the fact that our children are watching. What kind of role model do you want to be? Share your thoughts and this article.
