A Superlative on the Supreme Court

As a Black woman I looked on with pride as Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black woman, supreme court nominee sat in the chair before the Judicial Committee of the Senate. My pride quickly turned to disappointment as I watched Republican Senators attack her and try to sully her judicial record. Through it all, she persevered with dignity, grace, and intellect. In the end, Senator Corey Booker of New Jersey brought it all home with a positive spin. He said it all. His words were “I am not going to let anyone take the joy of this moment.” He said to Judge Brown-Jackson “you are worthy.”

How many times do we as Black people have to continue to prove ourselves? We have to work twice as hard, be three times as smart and still have our qualifications questioned. In the words of James Brown, “I don’t want nobody to give me nothing, open up the door I’ll get it myself.” Ketanji is opening the door for many little Black and Brown girls. Now, these little girls know they too can sit on the highest court in the land. It has been a long time coming but a change is about to come. “Right on K.B.J.” You are indeed worthy.
