Self-Sufficient

The articles presented on this platform are often from firsthand experiences, thoughts, and opinions that are shared by this team and supporters. This article is no different. I spoke with a cohort today and was compelled to address the subject “Self-Sufficient.” In my conversation with the aforementioned, it was noticeably clear that most of the decisions made in her life depended upon someone else, i.e., mortgage payment, insurance, car payment, and the like. The reality is that the person previously responsible for paying her expenses is no longer in the picture. She is now “insufficient.” On the flip side, I am self-sufficient, I was taught to handle my own business.

An example of my way of handling business involves my spouse and her earnings. I know of my wife’s earnings because our taxes are filed jointly. I never concern myself with her earnings and do not consider her earnings when handling our monthly expenses. Rest assured, I do know that my wife has my back should I need her assistance. Consequently, in speaking with my cohort today I was saddened that she was so dependent on a person that left her and her kids without considering the negative financial and emotional impact it would have on his family’s life.

Never become dependent on another person and relinquish control. We all must strive to become Self-Sufficient. We must maintain control over our destiny. Do not allow anyone to dim your light. In the words of Marianne Williamson “Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. Nothing is enlightening about shrinking so others won’t feel insecure around you. As you let your light shine, you indirectly permit others to do the same.”
