My career at the Steamhouse Restaurant in Atlanta was a direct result of my job as Manager at
the Abbey Restaurant also in Atlanta. For those of you that are from Atlanta you might
remember the Abbey as a fine dining establishment which was located at the corner of
Piedmont and Ponce de Leon inside of an old church. The staff dressed as Monks. One of the
now owners of the Steamhouse (Sam Weyman) was a bartender at the Abbey. He worked as
bartender there to gain the inside knowledge and experience of the restaurant business which
would later equip him to open a successful business of his own, The Steamhouse Restaurant.
Just before the Steamhouse opened in 1989 I received a call from Sam. He stated he was
opening a Restaurant in Buckhead and he wanted me to work in his new business. I thanked
Sam but told him I was no longer in the restaurant business and was pursuing a career in the
legal field. I would eventually be able to do both.
Well, what started out as helping Sam and his partner get his new business up and running
turned into thirty-plus years and some very memorable times. During those years I had the
pleasure of meeting many wonderful people who happened to be celebrities, (Gabrielle Union,
Traci Ellis Ross, Charles Barkley, Samuel L. Jackson) and many others. They appreciated the
tasty food and the excellent service. Then there were the regular people, too many to name
them all. However, I would like to give a shoutout to the standouts. They are Rick Cook (Big
Rick), Jason Brookings, Danielle Genson, Marc Calkins, Janelle, Sara, Rebecca, Derek (D), and
Holly. There are many others and I hope that they know they are special though their names
were not mentioned. I treasure the experience of meeting and/or working with all of them.
The Steamhouse was a part of my life where I learned a lot, met a lot of wonderful people,
gained invaluable lessons, and grew and matured into the well-rounded person I am today. The
Steamhouse was a part of my life for three decades and I will always remember the good times
and great experiences. Thank you, Sam, Chip, the staff past and present but most importantly
the customers for wonderful memories. Please follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
