Thankful

Thankful is defined in the dictionary as feeling or showing gratitude. It is when you are pleased
and grateful for what you have. There have been many people that have had a far-reaching
effect on my growth. The numbers are too great to name all of them. However, I remain
thankful to all of them.
My loving mother made tremendous sacrifices for my siblings and I. She taught us the value of
family, that we should treat others the way we want to be treated and to strive to be the best
at whatever we do. She also taught us that poverty was something that we could overcome
and that we indeed had the ability to do so. I am sure that she is looking down and smiling at
the fruit that she bore.
School proved to be challenging. There were educators my young mind did not want to listen
to though I realized later that they did have a positive impact on my life. In high school there
were two coaches at David t. Howard High School in Atlanta, GA. that had a positive impact on
my life (Coach Graves and Coach Sparks). There was also a special teacher at Atlanta Area
Technical School, Ms. Carol Collins. I recall one day she asked me to stay after class. She then
questioned me about my career goals. I informed here that I wanted to work in business. The
next day she gave me the name and number of a friend of hers that was a Dentist. She asked
me to call him, which I did because I needed dental work. He performed the needed dental
services for me free of charge because I could not afford to pay him. He encouraged me to
obtain employment as a Sales rep. I am forever grateful to both of them as their kindness gave
me that extra boost of confidence that I needed.
While working at a Restaurant I had the good fortune of meeting Gerry Carty. This man, my
friend has been a mentor, brother, and close confidant to me for years. I must admit that when
I first met Gerry, I was a bit agitated by him because he always told me the truth, which I did
not want to hear. He told me I was not organized, that I would start things and not finish, all of
which were true. Once I realized that he cared and was looking out for my best interest things
in my life began to change in many ways I never dreamed possible.
As I stated in the beginning of this narrative there are many other people that I am blessed to
have in my life. My wife is surely a person for whom I am thankful. She has been there for me
through many ups and downs. Please take the time to give thanks to those in your life that have
been there for you. Please follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Peace Out!
