New Year, New You
As 2023 approaches let us look back as this year comes to an end and ask
ourselves what can be done in 2023 to make things better. The world we live in
today is filled with discord, violence, and hatred. Think of things that can be done
to make things better for oneself, family, friends, and the community. Following
are small acts of kindness that are sure to brighten your day and possibly the day
of others. It does not take much to speak to a neighbor that is not always
friendly. Maybe a friendly gesture on your part will soften others’ hard hearts.
When you walk past a stranger, smile. You will be surprised at the response you
get when you smile at someone in passing. If you are shopping and the lines are
long, start a friendly conversation with the cashier and ask how he or she is doing.
If you have a cart full of items at the grocery store and the person behind you has
a few items allow that person to get in front of you. Be patient in traffic, accidents
happen and not much can be done other than waiting for the accident to clear. I
commit to always putting the safety of myself and others at the top of my list when
driving on the roadways. Show some kindness to others: hold a door open for
someone walking behind you, allow someone to move over in traffic when there
is congestion, and step aside for those with disabilities as they maneuver their way
through a line of people. If sitting beside someone in a group setting do not turn
your back as you engage in conversation with others in the group. When walking
past someone always say, “excuse me.” Let those you care about know how you
feel about them in words and actions. Take the time to help someone in need.
Take some homemade soup to a loved one that is under the weather. Look
within and think about what can be done for self-improvement. Unless you are
able to help someone, do not judge or criticize. Showing kindness can be
personally uplifting while also uplifting others. Small things that show kindness
and respect for others can make a big difference in someone’s life. Try it. Thumbs
up, like, and share.
