My parents were not educated in financial planning, but they did share with me things they were taught.
They said to me “get a job, pay your bills, save as much as you can, and you’ll receive social security”.
Many of you reading this article probably heard similar things from your parents.
The reality is that planning for retirement will work. We keep hearing that social security will not be
around. Planning for retirement has to start early. We as parents must teach our children the true value
of investing, letting your money make money for you. Invest in a 401K, learn stock investment,
purchase a home, and start a business. The aforementioned are just a few ways to build wealth. Most of all
nurture and develop good work ethics. 2nd Thessalonians 3:10 gave us this rule, “if a man will not work,
he shall not eat”.
We have all seen or heard of a family member or friend that reaches retirement and is unable to sustain
themselves. Just the other day I had a conversation with an elderly mother who was trying to find a
place for her brother who had no place to live. I’m not quite sure of the reason for his homelessness but
failing to plan (financially) could be the reason for this dilemma.
It’s heartbreaking to see people work hard and in their retirement, years being barely able to afford a
place to live or put food on the table. I’m imploring those reading this article to start saving or investing
if you’re not already doing so. Teach your children to start saving and investing early. Finally, I read an
article pertaining to Warren Buffett in which he stated that with a $120 stock investment many years
ago that investment eventually, over time garnered $350,000.Teach your children the fundamentals of
finance and how it works. This lesson can be life-changing and bless your children with a secure future.
