Elder Abuse
Elder Abuse should be of concern to anyone who cares about people and
treasures the wisdom of elders. Many European countries hold their elders in
high regard. However, here in the United States things are a bit different. As a
culture, we fall behind in the treatment of the elderly population. Many people
have their heads in the sand and refuse to acknowledge this serious issue.
According to the National Council on Aging, elder abuse includes physical abuse,
emotional abuse, sexual abuse, exploitation, neglect, and abandonment.
Perpetrators include children, other family members, and spouses- as well as staff
at nursing homes, assisted living, and other facilities. I contend that elder abuse
can also involve a financial component.
Elder abuse is typically inflicted by children, family members, and close friends.
Elder abuse happens more frequently than one might imagine but few are willing
to talk about it. This is a subject that’s uncomfortable for families to talk about,
but it (abuse) should be discussed. It is real, and the longer we live the more we
all will age. Just the mere thought of elder abuse infuriates me and by no means
should it be a part of one’s golden years. Let us do what is needed to treat our
elders with dignity and respect. Elders pave the way for the generations that
follow. They contribute much wisdom, knowledge, and intellect to our culture. Let
us continually honor their important contributions. Thumbs-Up, Like, and Share.
