Why Should I Tip

Why Should I Tip

Tipping is defined as The act of giving an amount of money to someone who has provided a service, especially in a hotel or restaurant: Tip is an acronym for To Ensure Promptness.

Hospitality workers usually receive far less hourly compensation than other people in the workforce so I understand why tipping is important for tip employees.

I started my career as a bus person and then became a bartender, tips were a huge part of my income as well as other people in this ( hospitality ) industry.

The difference between then and now is that tip employees in the eighties and nineties understood giving good service. Today’s hospitality workers especially restaurant employees think that they are owed an automatic 20% Gratuity; however, the consumer receives very little service.

Most servers today rarely greet you with a smile, the menu isn’t explained or any special being offered is mentioned. Once your food is brought to your table, you will probably not see the server until you find them and ask for your check. Another observation that I have noticed with service workers is cell phone usage while working. Workers pay more attention to the phones rather than the person that they want 20% from.

I want to be clear, there will be some people who will not tip no matter the service but giving good service has always been the answer for getting great tips. So I suggest that 20% is not owed to a server, it’s earned, provides the service, and receives the gratuity you desire.
