Gun Violence and the Human Effect
Gun violence is a public health epidemic! Every year, violence kills over 40,000 people and wounds over 75,000 others in the United States. Gun violence costs the United States $557 billion annually- equivalent to 2.6% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product.
This narrative will explore the various ways gun violence impacts people, from physical injuries to psychological trauma.
An average of 118 people a day died from a gun-related incident in 2023. For every person who dies by firearm, more than two survive, often with significant and expensive mental and physical injuries.
Gun related injuries have placed a strain on health costs to families. In 2022 the economic consequences totaled $557 billion. Most significant are the quality-of-life costs, which include the value of pain and well-being lost by survivors of firearm injuries, decedents, and their families.
Gun violence can have a number of psychological and emotional impacts including
Trauma which can lead to lasting adverse effects on a person’s life. Trauma can change how a person views themselves and the world around them.
Mental Health can lead to mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and intrusive thoughts.
Physical Health can lead to physical health concerns such as hypertension, pain, and gastrointestinal issues.
Suicide is a risk factor for suicide deaths among children and adolescents.
Community Impact gun violence can ripple out into the community, far beyond those who were shot or injured.
Our country must do a better job in dealing with gun violence. The impact of this menacing out of control violence has to stop. Everyone is impacted, families, health care system, and the public. Let’s demand that our politicians that we elect do more to stop these violence acts done with guns.
