The Myth About Private Investigators: More Than Just Following Cheating Spouses

When most people think of a private investigator (PI), they picture someone tailing a cheating spouse. While that is one aspect of the work, it’s far from the whole picture. I’ve been a private investigator since the late 1980s, and in my career, I’ve seen the field evolve and expand far beyond the stereotype.

In fact, PIs handle a wide range of cases. Some of the most important work done by private investigators involves areas like cyber security, fraud investigation, and internal theft. These are areas where a sharp eye and investigative expertise are crucial, especially in today’s digital age. A good PI can uncover fraud in businesses or expose vulnerabilities in a company’s internal systems.

My own focus has always been on criminal investigations. I’ve worked on some of the most serious and challenging cases, such as homicides, aggravated assaults, and other crimes that are often referred to as the “seven deadly sins.” These cases require more than just attention to detail—they demand experience, knowledge of the law, and an understanding of human behavior.

Private investigators are a tremendous asset to both criminal and civil attorneys. We help attorneys uncover facts, find witnesses, and gather evidence that can make or break a case. Many PIs, have a law enforcement background. That experience and knowledge are a big advantage in providing the thorough and professional services attorneys need.

So, the next time you hear someone say that a private investigator’s job is just about spying on cheating spouses, know that the reality is much broader—and much more impactful. Private investigators are a vital part of the legal system, helping in ways that go far beyond the common myths.
