Our Children are Priority 1

We must prepare our children for the future. Some may find this narrative uncomfortable, but the truth must be told.

I grew up in a time when communities functioned like villages—people cared for and looked out for each other. I was raised in a single-parent home, but our neighbors made sure my siblings and I were cared for while our mother worked. Our communities had Black-owned businesses—drugstores, banks, newspapers, grocery stores, and many other establishments that provided jobs and opportunities. But those communities no longer exist. So, what happened?

Integration played a role in dividing Black communities, and over time, people stopped looking out for their neighbors. More homes became single-parent households, making it even more difficult for single Black mothers to achieve financial stability. Unfortunately, children raised in these circumstances, without the support of family or a strong community, often suffer from a lack of adequate resources, guidance, and exposure.

It’s time for young mothers to understand the disadvantages their children face without support. Kids need nurturing, direction, and opportunities to thrive. Instead of making excuses, we must recognize that our children are our future. Let’s put them in a position where they have the opportunity to succeed.
