Enough Is Enough: Why Our Gun Laws Need to Change

I’m deeply troubled by the continued rise in violent crime across America. In my home state of Georgia, the governor recently signed into law what’s known as the “open carry” law. While the intention behind this law may have been to allow law-abiding citizens to openly carry firearms, it also restricts law enforcement from stopping or questioning individuals who are visibly carrying guns—unless there’s clear suspicion of criminal activity.

On April 25, 2025, just outside of Atlanta, a shooting took place inside a grocery store. Two innocent bystanders were shot—people who had nothing to do with the altercation. One of the individuals involved in the shooting was later charged with aggravated assault and found to be a convicted felon illegally in possession of a firearm. This tragic event is just one example of why the open carry law is flawed and dangerous.

During my daily travel through the city, I frequently see young adults walking around with guns hanging out of their pockets. What’s most concerning is the level of immaturity and impulsiveness some of these individuals display. Many of them seem ready to pull a trigger over something as small as a look or a disagreement.

We can’t ignore what’s happening. Too many of our fellow citizens are losing their lives to gun violence. It’s not just about rights—it’s about responsibility, safety, and common sense. Our current laws are failing us, and change must come before more lives are lost.

I’m asking everyone who reads this to speak up. Contact your local, state, and federal lawmakers. Share your concerns, demand action, and push for reforms that make our communities safer. Enough is enough. The time for change is now.
