Troubling Times: Teen Violence in America

Teen violence is on the rise across America, and as a resident of Georgia—specifically the Atlanta metro area—I am deeply concerned, as others should be. Almost daily, there are reports of shootings throughout the metro region. In just the past week, there were multiple shootings involving teens, including children as young as 10 years old. Some of these young victims were simply outside playing, caught in the crossfire—collateral damage in senseless acts of violence.

Some of these incidents are gang-related. Others stem from disputes over relationships or social media drama. But regardless of the reason, the result is always the same: lives shattered and communities shaken.

So, what’s driving this rise in teen violence?

From my years of interviewing young men and women—many of whom found themselves caught up in the criminal justice system—a few common themes continue to surface: hopelessness, poverty, lack of education, and an environment that fosters crime instead of discouraging it. A troubling number of these youth come from single-parent households, where one parent is either working long hours to provide or simply not present. Many grow up in neighborhoods where crime is part of daily life. Over time, violence becomes normalized.

Solving this crisis will require a team effort.

What does that look like? First, community involvement. We need our neighborhoods to be active, visible, and supportive. Mentorship, after-school programs, and safe spaces can change the trajectory of a child’s life. Second, businesses must give back. Many companies profit from these communities but invest nothing in return. If they benefit from the community, they should also help strengthen it. Third, government officials need to stop turning a blind eye. The root causes of this crisis are not a mystery—they are clear and have been for years.

Most importantly, families must step up. Parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts—we all have a role to play. Our children are our most valuable investment. Their safety, development, and future must come before everything else.

To every parent: do the right thing. Be present. Be involved. Nothing matters more than your child’s well-being. Our future depends on it.
