What do Private Investigators Really Do?

What Private Investigators Really Do — And How I Got Here

When most people hear “private investigator,” they imagine someone hiding in the bushes snapping photos of a cheating spouse. But the truth is, real investigative work goes far beyond that — and so does the path it takes to get here.

Before I ever stepped into a courtroom, I worked in the restaurant industry. It was during that time I met a young attorney who would unknowingly change the course of my life. He invited me to start going to court with him. I wasn’t a lawyer, but he showed me the ropes — how the court system operated, how cases were structured, and how critical preparation and detail really are in the legal world.

For about a year, I followed and helped him with civil cases. One day, he looked at me and said, “You need to start your own investigative business.” That sentence stuck. I didn’t know it then, but it would set the stage for a new career.

I began spending time at the criminal courts in our county, where I eventually crossed paths with one of the best criminal defense attorneys in the Atlanta area. Working with him gave me an opportunity that changed everything — I was brought in to assist on several major criminal cases. These weren’t just petty crimes; they were high-stakes cases that made headlines. And every case required deep digging, strategic thinking, and most importantly, a commitment to the truth.

That’s what real private investigators do.

We investigate serious matters — homicides, assaults, fraud, missing persons, workplace theft, cybercrime, and more. Our job is not to dramatize or exaggerate — it’s to find facts. We interview witnesses, track down overlooked information, comb through records, and sometimes uncover truths that others have missed. In many cases, what we discover can be the difference between someone going to prison or walking free.

Private investigators are also hired in civil matters — like verifying someone’s background, locating assets, or gathering evidence in family court battles. We help attorneys, businesses, and everyday people get the answers they need when no one else can.

It’s not glamorous. It’s not always exciting. But it matters.

My journey didn’t start in law enforcement or the military. It started with curiosity, opportunity, and the guidance of good people who saw something in me. Today, I lead Verifacts Investigation, where our team brings over sixty years of combined experience in both criminal and civil investigations. We are committed to helping our clients uncover the truth — no shortcuts, no assumptions, just solid investigative work.

Because at the end of the day, that’s what private investigators really do.
