Enough Is Enough: Atlanta Must Wake Up to Stop the Violence

Every day in our city, Atlanta, there’s another headline—another shooting, another homicide, another life gone too soon. Lately, it feels like this has become our new normal. But let me be clear: this is not normal, and we cannot accept it as such.

According to national data, cities like Baltimore, New Orleans, and St. Louis may slightly outpace Atlanta in terms of violent crime, but that doesn’t mean we should breathe easy. Atlanta is in the middle of a violent crime crisis, and it’s happening right in our neighborhoods—on our blocks, in our parks, at gas stations, and even near schools.

We’re talking about senseless killings, often over petty disputes or nothing at all. And what’s heartbreaking is that most of the victims—and the perpetrators—look like us. Young Black men and women are dying, not from disease or natural causes, but from bullets. This is not just crime; this is self-destruction.

It’s time that we, as Black people, say enough is enough.

We can no longer shrug our shoulders and say, “That’s just how it is.” No, that’s not how it has to be. We must stop glorifying violence, stop ignoring warning signs, and stop protecting silence. This is about saving lives—our lives, our children’s lives, our future.

So where do we begin?

It all starts at home. Parents, guardians, and families have to step up. Our children need to know that violence is not the way to solve problems. Disagreements don’t need to end with funerals. We must teach our kids about respect, conflict resolution, and the value of life—starting from the time they can walk.

But families can’t do it alone. Communities, civic organizations, churches, and local governments need to come together—not just when there’s a tragedy, but every single day. We need to invest in youth programs, job training, mental health services, and spaces where our young people feel seen and heard.

We need to make it uncool to pick up a gun. We need to show that real strength is walking away from drama, not starting it.

Atlanta, we are better than this.

We built this city. We fill its churches, run its small businesses, shape its culture, and raise its future. So we must also be the ones who save it.

Let’s stop the violence. Let’s hold each other accountable. Let’s fight for peace the way others fight for power.

Because one more child lost is one too many.
