“Building our Future, Together”

In my last article, Not in Their Plans: But in Our Hands, I spoke about the reality that Black people cannot rely on others to design our future. That responsibility rests with us. Let me be clear: this message is not about disliking or resenting any other culture or ethnic group. It is about love for our people, belief in our potential, and the determination to build a strong future.

The truth is simple—no one will care for our communities more than we do. Other groups have built networks, think tanks, and businesses that prioritize their people, and they have succeeded because of unity and strategy. We must do the same. If those in power do not include us in their plans, then we must create our own.

The Power of Think Tanks

The first step is knowledge. We need organized think tanks made up of attorneys, educators, researchers, financial experts, and doctors. Their role would be to study the needs of our communities and provide clear strategies for progress.

  • Attorneys can protect our rights and push for fairer laws.
  • Financial experts can create investment cooperatives and credit unions.
  • Educators can shape curriculums that prepare our children for leadership.
  • Doctors can address healthcare gaps that weaken our communities.

These groups would provide the blueprint for change—solutions based on facts, planning, and vision.

Ground Forces to Take Action

But ideas alone are not enough. We also need people on the ground—those who will carry out the strategies with discipline and consistency. These are the builders, mentors, parents, volunteers, and small business owners who bring the vision to life.

If a think tank creates a plan to strengthen Black-owned businesses, ground forces can promote those businesses, organize directories, and host workshops to support them. If educators develop after-school programs, the ground forces can secure space, recruit tutors, and make sure children attend. Change requires both thinkers and doers, working hand in hand.

Three Key Areas of Focus

  1. Rebuilding Communities – We need safe, thriving neighborhoods with affordable housing, local stores, green spaces, and cultural centers. Places where families feel proud to live and grow.
  2. Strengthening Schools – Education must prepare our children not just to get by, but to lead. Financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and technology should be just as important as reading and math.
  3. Creating Businesses Across Sectors – We must expand beyond the few industries where we are visible. Black ownership in technology, healthcare, finance, and construction creates jobs, independence, and wealth that circulate within our communities.

Unity and Self-Determination

This is not about exclusion. It is about self-determination. Other groups have succeeded because they planned for themselves, and we have the same right—and responsibility.

The time for waiting has passed. We can no longer hope that someone else’s plan will benefit us. Our progress depends on unity, vision, and action. By combining the strategies of our thinkers with the dedication of our doers, we can shape communities that reflect our strength and potential.

Because our future is not in their plans. It is, and always will be, in our hands.
