“When Hard Times Lead To Hard Choices”

Across the nation, crime and violence are becoming more frequent, and unfortunately, this trend may continue. With more people being laid off, struggling to find stable work, or watching their savings disappear, many families are facing hard times. When the ability to provide for loved ones is threatened, desperation can set in. While I do not condone crime or violence, we must face the reality that our current economy will cause a massive increase in criminal activity if we don’t act as a community.

Behind every statistic is a story—a parent trying to feed their children, a worker who lost their job, or a young person who feels there’s no opportunity ahead. These situations don’t excuse crime, but they help us understand the pressure some people are under. When financial stress builds and people feel alone, bad decisions can follow.

We can’t just rely on law enforcement to fix this. The solution must start within our neighborhoods, families, and circles of friends. Communication is key. We need to talk to one another about what’s happening, share resources, and look out for people before they reach the breaking point. Sometimes a meal, a ride, or even a conversation can make all the difference.

This is also a time for leaders—both community and political—to listen and invest in people. Job programs, small business support, and affordable housing are not just economic policies—they are crime prevention tools. When people have hope and stability, crime decreases naturally.

At the same time, we as individuals have a role to play. If you know someone who’s struggling, reach out. If you have extra, share it. If you have influence, use it to create opportunities. Everyone can do something.

Hard times test the strength of any society. But when we pull together, we can prevent desperation from turning into destruction. Let’s choose compassion, communication, and cooperation over fear and isolation. Together, we can make our communities safer, stronger, and more united—even in difficult times.
