To Wars, One Nation, What are We Really Fighting?

We as U.S. citizens may not have control over whether our country engages in wars with other nations. Those decisions are made by elected officials, military leaders, and people far removed from our everyday lives. But while we watch conflicts unfold overseas, we must also face a hard truth—there is another war happening right here at home.

And this one, we cannot ignore.

Across this country, violence is taking place every single day. In our neighborhoods, at gas stations, in homes, and at public gatherings. Innocent people are being hurt. Families are being destroyed. Lives are being cut short—not by foreign enemies, but by our own people.

This is a war within.

While billions of dollars may be spent on conflicts abroad, we must ask ourselves—what are we doing about the violence here? What are we doing to protect our communities? What are we doing to guide our young people away from a path that leads to prison or death?

We cannot sit back and say, “There’s nothing we can do.”

Because there is.

This war at home requires accountability, discipline, and leadership—starting in our homes and extending into our communities. Parents, mentors, teachers, and community leaders all play a role. We must teach values. We must teach conflict resolution. We must show the next generation that violence is not the answer.

At the same time, we must demand more from those in power. Just as resources are allocated for wars overseas, there must be real investment in our communities—education, job opportunities, mental health support, and violence prevention programs.

Both wars—the one overseas and the one here at home—need attention.

But the difference is this: we may not control the one overseas, but we absolutely have influence over what happens in our own communities.

If we don’t address the violence here, if we continue to ignore the warning signs, then this internal war will continue to grow—and more innocent lives will be lost.

It’s time to take responsibility.

Because a nation cannot be strong abroad if it is broken at home.
