Before cell phone cameras or video cameras became popular people of color were being arrested and charged with crimes that they did not commit. Our society for years has been unwilling to accept the fact that certain groups of people in this country have been continually mistreated by law enforcement and other groups across America.
Over the past few years, cameras have allowed the world to witness a small percentage of the injustices that happen to people of color when the perpetrators are unaware that a camera is present. In many cases even when the person committing the violent acts knows that a camera is being used brutal crimes are still carried out.
The George Floyd killing was very disturbing. Mr. Floyd repeatedly told the officer that he could not breathe while many others in the crowd pleaded with the officer to remove his knee from Mr. Floyd’s neck. There are so many more occurrences like the Floyd incident that could be listed. Thanks to cameras and cell phones serving as cameras the truth is being revealed.
On April 10, 2021, WSB TV Reporter Audrey Washington did a story on a Children’s Day Care Center in Roswell, Ga. In Ms. Washington’s report, a video clip showed children at this daycare having lunch. What’s disturbing about this clip is the image of white children having lunch while the black children are not being fed.
I believe that most people are good people; however, there is a significant part of our society that still harbors hate. Because of cell phone cameras and video cameras, acts of violent behavior are being captured on tape. My wish is for people to treat each other with mutual respect and work together no matter the color of ones’ skin. By doing so the world will become a better place.
