Insurance?

We all need insurance for many reasons (life insurance, car insurance, homeowners insurance, and more) but are we getting what we’ve paid for?
My first experience filing a claim had to do with the theft of rims from my car. The alternator on the vehicle stopped working suddenly, so I had to leave the car on the side of the road that night. This happened around 2 am while leaving work but I returned hours later only to find that the rims on my car had been stolen. My insurance carrier at the time did compensate me for the stolen rims, but they (the insurance carrier) canceled my insurance.
On another occasion, my wife and I first purchased homeowners insurance in the early ’80s and had the same carrier until around 2008. During those years with this insurance company, we never filed a claim but our coverage with this provider was canceled and no real reason was given. We were very disappointed, so we wrote to the Georgia Insurance Commissioner who ultimately sided with the insurance company. But we weren’t done, so we also contacted an attorney who told us that we were red-lined (zip code)! Lots of companies use zip codes to determine prices and in some cases, if they will provide services in an area.
Unfortunately, recently we had to replace part of the flooring in our home due to water damage and the interesting thing is that our insurance provider made it clear that they would only pay a certain amount, and getting a good plumber was a bit of a challenge. Several plumbing companies asked for our zip code with most of them telling us that their company did not service our area.
Finally, yes, insurance can and will help with out-of-pocket costs, but why are we penalized if we have to file a claim and why does our zip code determine the price we pay for goods and services? Goods and services should be the same regardless because the product or services are equal.
I’m unsure of how to address this unfair practice but something needs to take place to change these policies. Please give VMG a thumbs-up, alike, a share, and please subscribe because we need your support.

  1. Well said. I 100% agree. If the insurance commissioner is in the pocket of these big companies, he or she needs to go. Secondly, writing a not so nice review on google or with BBB might shed light and encourage others to do likewise who have had similar experiences. My hope, if enough people voice their concerns, something will happen.
