Gun Violence

The violence in this country is primarily caused by guns though the pundits state otherwise.  They contend that the gun violence is attributed to the people who own the firearms. This is partly true.  Let us dig a little deeper into this gun situation. There is a group of people that constantly refer to the second amendment as the reason the overabundance of guns should continue to flow into this country. They say they have the constitutional right to bear arms.  Then there are the gun manufacturers that are making massive amounts of money. The problem I see is that oftentimes people leave their guns unsecured.  When criminals break into homes and cars, they use these same weapons to commit crimes and harm others.  In some states one does not need a license to carry a weapon.  In those states individuals with bad intentions and short fuses are just waiting on a reason to pull the trigger of these stolen weapons.

We need to stop using the second amendment as a reason to carry weapons of war.  The second amendment was drafted on September 25, 1789.  This is not a reason to defend the barrage of weapons that have infiltrated this country.  The weapons from 1789 are miniscule compared to the powerful, annihilating weapons that are heavily marketed by the greedy gun manufacturers. I do believe that people have the right to defend themselves and bear arms. However, I also have the right to walk the streets of my community, go to the grocery store, to church, to the nightclub, to the movie and to concerts without having to fear being shot or killed. A commonsense approach to responsible gun ownership is what is needed.  Let us take the civilized approach, remove weapons of war from our streets and make this country safer, kinder, more accepting and a place where we all can enjoy life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
