Together We Can!!!

We Already Understand the Power of Teamwork—Now Let’s Use It

It’s no secret that when people come together with a common purpose, incredible things happen. Whether it’s on the basketball court, in the boardroom, or at the dinner table, teamwork changes everything. As African Americans, we know this truth deep in our bones. We’ve lived it through family reunions, church gatherings, and community events. But now it’s time to apply this same principle in a way that moves us forward—economically, educationally, and socially.

I recently heard a podcast that spotlighted the Patel community and how they came to own over 25% of the hotel and motel business in America. How did they do it? Not by competing against each other—but by working with one another. Families pooled their resources. They invested in one another’s dreams. They built businesses, then reached back to pull the next person up. That kind of unity creates generational wealth and thriving communities.

You’ll find similar stories across many cultures. The common thread? They collaborate, not compete. They trust each other enough to build together. The question we must ask ourselves is this: if they can do it, why not us?

Look at sports—Michael Jordan, the greatest of all time, didn’t win six championships alone. It took Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, Steve Kerr, Phil Jackson, and a team that believed in a shared mission. Individual greatness means nothing if it doesn’t contribute to collective success.

We already understand the concept. It’s part of who we are. But now it’s time to move from understanding to implementation. It’s time to stop measuring success in isolation and start building it together. That means supporting Black-owned businesses, mentoring our youth, forming investment groups, starting schools, owning property, and most importantly—trusting each other.

The potential in our community is limitless. But potential without action is wasted. The path forward requires us to shift our mindset from “me” to “we.” That’s how we change our neighborhoods. That’s how we rewrite our financial future. And that’s how we honor those who came before us—by building a legacy that lasts.

Together, we rise.
