Two Shootings, One Nation: The Need for Real Leadership

Hatred is one of the most destructive forces in our society. Disliking or loathing someone because of their skin color, sexuality, political beliefs, or religious affiliation is wrong. It’s harmful not just to the person being targeted, but to the entire community.

Imagine being hated simply because of who you are — not because of anything you’ve done. Would you be offended? Would you feel unsafe? Sadly, this is the reality for many people every day, and it’s tearing our country apart.

Yesterday, there were two shootings in Colorado — one on a college campus and the other at a high school. Both incidents should alarm every single one of us, regardless of political affiliation. Instead of focusing on the victims — the students injured, the families shaken, the communities traumatized — a person in power chose to use one of these tragedies to make a political point. They blamed “the left” and specifically the Democrats for what happened. This is not only false, but it also fuels more division and anger.

We need leaders who will speak for all citizens, not just their base. We need leaders who care about people over politics. That is why this year’s midterm elections are so critical. If you are not registered to vote, please register. And when it’s time to vote, don’t just focus on national elections — your local, state, and federal representatives all play a role in shaping our future.

Talk to your neighbors, your co-workers, your church members, and your friends. Encourage everyone you know to vote, because their vote truly matters — now more than ever. Change starts with us.

Take action today: Check your voter registration and make a plan to vote at vote.org.
