Preparation!!!

Most people don’t plan to fail. They fail because they don’t plan at all. In my years working investigations, I’ve learned that collateral damage doesn’t just happen in wars or crime scenes. It happens quietly in everyday life when people are unprepared.

Lack of preparation shows up in many forms. It shows up when a person loses a job and has no savings. It shows up when someone signs paperwork they don’t understand. It shows up when families are forced to make emotional decisions under pressure because they never had a plan. When that happens, the damage spreads. Children feel it. Spouses feel it. Communities feel it.

In criminal cases, I’ve seen how financial stress pushes people into bad choices. A missed bill turns into desperation. Desperation turns into shortcuts. Shortcuts often turn into crimes. The person may be charged, but the real collateral damage is the family left behind, the lost income, and the future that suddenly looks very different.

Preparation is not about fear. It’s about stability. When people have even a small financial cushion, access to information, or a basic understanding of their rights, their options expand. Without preparation, options disappear quickly. That’s when people become reactive instead of intentional.

Collateral damage also happens when people ignore warning signs. They ignore health issues, legal notices, financial statements, or changes in behavior around them. By the time they act, the problem has grown. What could have been managed early now requires damage control.

I’ve worked cases where one decision changed multiple lives. Not because the person was bad, but because they were unprepared. No guidance. No backup plan. No understanding of the consequences. Preparation could have changed the outcome.

As we move into 2026, the goal shouldn’t just be resolutions. It should be readiness. Readiness to handle financial setbacks. Readiness to ask questions before signing documents. Readiness to recognize risk before it becomes loss.

Preparation doesn’t guarantee success, but lack of preparation almost guarantees struggle. When people fail to prepare, they don’t just hurt themselves. They become collateral damage in a system that doesn’t slow down or make exceptions.
