Stop Saying You Can’t Save: Start Building Your Future
I’m not a financial expert, but I do believe in listening to people who understand finance and wealth building. One person I have followed is Dr. Boyce Watkins, who has spent years educating people about finance, investing, and economic empowerment.
My purpose in mentioning him is simple: saving and investing are too important for us to ignore.
Let me be very clear. Before you say, “I can’t afford to save,” take a serious look at where your money is going.
Many of us will spend money on things that give us instant gratification—eating out, entertainment, clothes, expensive phones, and other things we may want but don’t necessarily need. Yet, we sometimes fail to put money aside for the one person we will eventually have to depend on—ourselves.
Saving and investing require commitment and discipline.
Start small.
What if you saved or invested just $5 a day?
That equals approximately $260 a year.
Over 20 years, you would have contributed $5,200of your own money—and that doesn’t include the additional growth that could come from investing and compound returns.
Now imagine increasing that amount as your income grows.
Five dollars becomes ten dollars.
Ten dollars becomes twenty dollars.
Over time, small decisions can create financial options.
The purpose isn’t necessarily to become rich overnight. The purpose is to build a financial cushion, prepare for emergencies, reduce financial stress, and have something available when your working years come to an end.
Most importantly, teach this lesson to your children.
Imagine a young person learning to save and invest at 15, 18, or 21 instead of waiting until they’re 40 or 50. Time can become one of their greatest financial advantages.
We teach our children how to work for money. We should also teach them how to save money, invest money, and allow money to work for them.
You don’t have to start with hundreds or thousands of dollars.
Start with $5.
The amount may seem small today, but the habit you develop could change your financial future.
Start today.
Stay committed.
Increase the amount when you can.
Your future is worth investing in.
