Donald Trump on the World Stage: Influence, but How Much Trust?

When President Donald Trump speaks, world leaders listen. His decisions can affect trade, military alliances, and conflicts far beyond the United States. But being influential does not mean being widely trusted.

A 2026 Pew Research Center survey found that, across 36 countries, a median of just 23% of adults had confidence in Trump to handle world affairs. That figure tells us how people in those countries view his leadership; it does not mean every government shares the same opinion.

Among America’s allies, the response is complicated. Some credit Trump’s pressure with encouraging NATO countries to spend more on their own defense. At the same time, officials in Europe have raised concerns about whether they can count on continued U.S. support.

Opinions also differ from country to country. Gallup found that approval of U.S. leadership fell in many allied nations in 2025, while rising in Israel. That survey measured views of American leadership, rather than Trump personally, but it helps show how differently countries are responding to the United States.

In my view, the question for Americans is bigger than whether Trump is admired abroad. Is his approach making the United States safer, strengthening its partnerships, and helping it achieve lasting results? A country can command attention through its power. Earning trust takes consistency.
