Education Is a Continuous Journey: Are We Ever Too Old to Learn?

At 76 years old, I am planning to return to college. Some people may wonder why a senior citizen would want to go back to school at this stage of life. My answer is simple: education is a continuous journey, and learning should never have an age limit.

The world is changing rapidly. Artificial intelligence, advanced computer applications, and other new technologies are transforming how we communicate, conduct business, investigate information, and perform everyday tasks. These advancements offer tremendous opportunities, but they can also leave people behind if they do not understand the basics.

That is why improving my computer skills is important to me. I do not want to stand on the sidelines and watch technology reshape the world. I want to understand it, use it, and discover how it can help me become more productive in my business, investigative work, writing, and service to my community.

Returning to college will not be without challenges. I may sit in classrooms with students young enough to be my grandchildren. Technology may sometimes seem confusing, and learning new subjects may require patience. However, age has also given me something valuable: decades of experience, discipline, determination, and a clear sense of purpose.

Older adults should never believe that their opportunity to learn has passed. We may not learn at the same pace or in the same way that we did when we were younger, but we can still learn. In fact, education can help senior citizens remain mentally active, socially connected, confident, and involved in a rapidly changing society.

Going back to school is not about trying to become young again. It is about continuing to grow.

I believe that as long as we have curiosity, purpose, and the willingness to try, we are never too old to improve ourselves. A person’s age should not determine whether they can enter a classroom, learn how to use artificial intelligence, strengthen their computer skills, or pursue a goal they once had to postpone.

My return to college represents more than earning credits or completing courses. It represents a refusal to stop learning and a commitment to preparing myself for the future.
